Anaʼs Story: A Journey of Hope

This book is written by First Daughter Jenna Bush. She worked as an intern with UNICEF, and in her first book, she wrote the story of a young woman whom she became friends with during her internship. This friend’s name was Ana.

Ana had HIV/AIDS. She knew, from the time she was young, that she was different from other children her age. She was sick, and she didn’t know why. She was born infected with HIV/AIDS, which was the result of her parentʼs death. She lived a hard life full of suffering, abuse, and mistreatment from different relatives she lived with.

Then Ana meets Berto at a center that specializes in the treatment of her disease. When she meets Berto, she feels she can trust him with any secret- including the secret she has dealt with since the day she was born. They soon fall in love, which leads them to make a rash decision. What once seemed like a death sentence turns into the longing for a life of education and having a family with Berto. A life that her parents never had the chance to live.

Jenna Bush has written a powerful nonfiction story of Anaʼs hard, long journey from the day she was born with HIV/AIDS to her hardships of sharing a life with someone else. The book is filled with several photographs and is written in short, easy reading chapters. This book is written from the point of view of Jenna Bush. It effectively sends a message to people about HIV/AIDS and the importance of being safe and wise while making quick decisions in life.
