Post: Are You Too Young for Your Partner?

Being in a relationship can do you two things - it can either make you a better person or make you worse. There are a lot of teenagers that seems to be fairly attracted to older men or women. But could a relationship work where you and your partner have a big age gap?

Technically, there is no predefined answer to this question. Your parents may not approve of your relationship. Your friends might even find it weird. But if there are two persons who should have a say about your relationship, that would be you and your partner.

Would It Really Work?

Issues of the heart are always complicated things. What you can do is to look at your relationship on a different perspective and see the big picture. Do you really think that you would sustain this kind of relationship? Do not think that you-and-me-against-the-world set up is romantic and overwhelming. Look deeper into your relationship and discover for yourself if being in this kind of relationship would do you good or otherwise.

If you are in high school or your early days at college and your partner has been out of school for years, just imagine the difference of your two worlds. You are both living in an entirely different environment. Your level of maturity and understanding is really different from your older partner no matter how you mature you think you are.

The age gap is just a term to point out the numeric difference of your birth age, but in fact, age gap also refers to the difference on both of your life experiences. You still have a lot to learn. Your partner already knows a lot of things. You might ride on fast track and miss the things that you need to learn for yourself. And the saddest thing is, you might miss the sweetness of your youth altogether because you wanted to assume the role of a “mature” girlfriend/ boyfriend in order to keep up with your partner.

Are You Ready For Sex?

Being exposed to sex is also an issue in this kind of relationship. Since your partner may have past relationships that involve sex, he or she might possibly want this from you. This would definitely create a certain pressure in your relationship and you might do something that you are not prepared for just yet.

Are You Old Enough?

There are also some legal issues that you need to look into. In some countries, like Canada and United States of America, a teenager is not allowed to engage in sex until he/ she reaches the age of consent. It does not matter if you are in a serious relationship with someone, if you have sex and you are under the age of consent (AOC), the act counts for statutory rape.

The age of consent differs from country to country and state to state. In Canada, Hawaii, Iowa and South Carolina the age of consent is as low as 14 years old (In the UK it is 16). You need to check your country’s law and local state law to make sure that you are above the age of consent, otherwise, your partner is bound to be in legal trouble.

What Do Your Parents Think?

If your parents have something to say about your relationship, hear them out. It is always a good thing to listen to their advice. Your parents only wanted what’s best for you. Gauge the advantage and disadvantages of your relationship and think years ahead before continuing your commitment with your partner.

Relationships are all about learning together and growing together. If you and your partner have a big age gap, remember that you would not achieve a higher maturity level simply because you are dating an older guy or girl. Allow yourself to have a personal growth and discover things on your own time.
