Being able to change the look of your theme on a per-category basis is one of the things that makes wordpress so great. With this ability you can make major or minor changes to how certain categories work, look and feel when displayed.

For the purpose of this tutorial i have edited the blogging tips category, when you visit that category, you will notice that it is the only category that displays a short paragraph underneath the main category title. It is also the only category that does not display the post rating.

This is only the basics of what this function of wordpress can do, but you get the idea of what can be achieved. Another good example of what can be achieved is what used to be used at wpdesigner*, basicly they used once category as a gallery for their wordpress themes.

How is it done?

Its simple really, just duplicate your category.php (or archive.php depending on the theme), add a hypen (-) and then the id of the category (id can be found here –> wp-admin > manage > categories).

You can now edit the file as you wish, once you have finished, just upload the file into your theme folder and visit that category in your browser to view the changes.
