Post: Blogging Tips: Upgrading Wordpress
Upgrading wordpress can seem impossible to anyone that is not familiar with upgrading scripts, however the process is actually very simple. Below are the steps i take to ensure a smooth upgrade.
- Make a note - be sure to jot down any changes (change log) you have made to any core files, once you upgrade these files will be re-written and therefor any previous hacks or edits to these files will be lost.
- Backup - backup any data you can, that includes all files, databases (ask your host for help if needed) and anything else you think may be important. Nothing worse then getting half-way through an upgrade and you lose power. Worst case scenario is you end up with a corrupted install and have no backup to restore.
- Download - grab the latest version from the wordpress website*. Be sure that it comes directly from the wordpress site and no where else.
- Extract - extract the files to your hard drive, be sure all files are extracted.
- FTP/Upload - now you can ftp all files to you site, the idea is that you copy them directly over the old ones (overwriting them). A list of free ftp software can be found here*.
- Run the upgrade - now you can log-in to your wp-admin, once there you add upgrade.php onto the url (it should look something like yoursite.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php). If the upgrade needs changes to be run on the database it will instruct you to click the upgrade link, if not it will say no upgrade needed.
- Check - now visit your site and make sure everything is working as it should be, if you have compatibility issues, you can always restore your backup.
- Re-edit - now you can re-edit any files you had changed prior to the installation (see your change log that you made).
- All done - wordpress should now be ready and upgraded.
Note: a lot of hosting providers provide a one click install service called fantasico, i would advise against using such scripts as they are not always updated with the latest versions. Besides how will you learn if you dont do it yourself?
Below is also a video that shows you an alternative way that you can use to upgrade wordpress, its not my video, i just found it whilst on youtube.
