Post: Damaged by Cathy Glass
Following up on my previous post, i thought i would write a little review for the book ‘Damaged - The Heart Breaking True Story Of A Forgotten Child’. Remember this book is a true story and actually happened.
Once i started reading, that was it, i could not put the book down again. I started reading the first chapter at 11.45PM and before i knew it, it was 2AM and i had read just over 100 pages :O
Within a week (it only took that long to read because i took a break from it while i stayed at my girlfriends house) i had finished the book, and i am not embarrassed to say that i did shed a tear at the end when she (Cathy the foster carer) tells you about how the child (Jodie) had to leave them so she could get proper therapy in a specialized child’s home.
Although Jodie could not show (or feel) emotions (due to her past), and even though 99% of the time she is in her own little world, where no one can reach her, when it is time for her to leave her carer and move to the child’s home, she acts like Cathy was not even there and that she was glad to be moving away from her at last. However, when Cathy returns home (this is where i cried a little), she finds a note, this is what it says;
Dear Cathy,
Paula is writing this as i don’t know my words. It was kind of you to look after me and i wish i could have stayed. I’m sorry for all the bad things i did. I cant help it. Something makes me. You are the only person who has looked after me and not got angry. I think you understand. I hope you forgive me. Adrian, Lucy and Paula are very lucky. When they have made me better can i come and live with you? Will you be my new mummy? I don’t want my old one.
Love,
Jodie
The book ends with Jodie moving into the new child’s home and Cathy gives you an update on her progress. Jodie had made slight improvements, however when she went for a CAT scan, it was found out that Jodie had brain damage (probably from early age from being hit to the head on more than one occasion).
Social services are also partly to blame, Jodie was on the at risk register since birth, and by the time social service took her into care, she had had more than 50 visits to casualty, with broken bones, scalds, burns and cuts. Her case file was so big, it filled 2 suitcases. If anyone had took the time to read the file all the way through, Jodie’s future may had been saved, But for now we can only hope.
Jodie has made slight improvements, but as each year passes, she continues to fall further and further behind her peers, will she ever live a normal life? the chances are slim, but miracles do happen.

Damaged is one of the most eye-opening, thought provoking books I have ever gotten to read. Jodie is quite the character, and by showing what happens when we almost completely stop developing, it shows how much we develop. Ehmagad, it’s suh-oh fantast-ayc. lol
