i went into my local chippy today and and a guy i used to go to school with was working there. i asked him what he was doing with himself and he said he was in his last year at sixth form..i asked if he had applied to uni and he said he didnt want to and that he wanted to take over his dads dry cleaning shop on the high street… he would be the sole owner of the business at the age of 18 ( hes a year younger than me) i thought wow fair play why go to university and study a degree in business managment for 3 to 4 years if you could go straight into being a manager and earn money instead of getting into debt.

when i left the shop the girl i was with was making a very anxious face and so i asked her what was wrong..she said..

‘people stop dreaming beyond what they can see. hes given up on the idea of and education, a trip to unversity because what he has infront of him is so easy. he doesnt have to work for it its just…there. poeple give up on the dream if they can get away without the work.they no longer dream’

she was right..i had dropped out of university for the wrong reasons. im not saing you wont succeed if you dont go to university im just saying that if you do…you have that head start in life. it doesnt matter if you got to university when your 18 or 80 because your not doing it for everybody else your doing it for you. i had dropped out because i had managerial prospects at work and thought why go to university if i dont need to? i can make money and get to the same place.

i regret dropping out and ive reapplied to start in september. we all want our dreams to come true whether we want to be the next big lawyer/doctor/scientist. dont give up because it will take hard work and you will fail before you get there. nothing should be handed onto a plate you should work for everything you have.

we all have a memory of that first toy or whatever we bought with out own money…the satisfaction of knowing you did the hard work and you earnt whatever you got.

where has that element of self satisfaction gone?
