Tools Needed:
- NirCmd utility - Download
- Windows OS
Downloading NirCmd
Firstly download and extract the NirCmd utility to your desktop. Make note of where the files are located.
Creating The Shortcut
Right-Click on the desktop and select New and then Shortcut (below)

When the location box pops up, click browse and locate nircmd.exe (it will be in the folder you just extracted, once the location is filled out, make a space and add "cdrom open D:" to the end (note: if your CD/DVD drive has a different letter change the D as needed). It should look something like below

Naming The Shortcut
Give your shortcut a name you will remember, i named mine "CD Open"

The shortcut can be placed wherever you like (providing you dont move the files you just downloaded), double clicking it will now make your CD/DVD drive open up.
Give The Shortcut Some Style
If you want to give your shortcut a makeover, right-click it and select properties, click on the shortcut tab and then click on change icon (you may get an error pop-up, just click on ok to continue).
You can now choose an icon for your shortcut, i used windows DVD icon.
