Post: How To Get Yourself On The Web - Choosing A Web Host
Choosing A Reliable Web Host
Choosing the right web hosting company is very important, prices range from free to around £20-£30 a month, generally, the more you pay, the better the service you receive.
For e.g. a free/cheap host may contain ads on your pages, have restrictions on what you are allowed to run, or just simply don’t give your enough resources. A guide to free/cheap hosts is below.
Free/Cheap Web hosts
- Are they ad/pop-up free? (a lot of free hosts have a requirement that puts there adverts onto your pages, you have no control over the ads and they can be annoying to your visitors)
- Have restrictions on what you can run (a lot of these host wont let you run certain applications or scripts on your website, which means you have to build your site around your host)
- Have low amount of resources (500MB space and 500MB monthly bandwidth may seem like a lot, but how long will it last? currently this site uses a few GB of space and just under 1GB of bandwidth, and this site is still small!) (also do they allow you to run php scripts, mysql, stats software etc? Most cheap hosts do not.)
- Are they reliable (No doubt there has to be some that are reliable, however if you asked 100 people that have had various web hosting deals, i bet 90% would sa, you get what you pay for! What would run better, a new pc with top specs that costs £600, or one that costs £300 with outdated stuff in?)
The last tip i will give you is do not rush in there, shop around for a bit, ask others that have had hosting before, research how reputable the company is etc before you buy from them. See if you can have a 7 day trial, or a try before you buy period.
My Hosting Vs A Cheap Host
Here i compare my web hosting to a random cheap host, my host is on the left and the cheap one on the right.
- Web space: 10GB // 500MB
- Bandwidth: 300GB // 1GB
- PHP Scripting: Yes // Yes
- CGI: Yes // No
- MySQL: Yes (unlimited databases) // No
- Control Panel: cPanel or plesk // Plesk
- Email Accounts: Yes (unlimited) // Yes (5)
- FTP: Yes // Yes
- Guaranteed Ram: Yes (256mb) // No
- Dedicated IP Addresses: Yes (4) // No
- Can Host More Than 1 Website/Domain: Yes (unlimited) // No
- Reseller Access: Yes // No
- Root Access: Yes // No
- Can Install Any Script/Software: Yes // No
- Daily Site Backups: Yes // No
- Firewall/Anti-virus/Security: Yes (can install whatever you wish) // No (or not stated)
- Price (per month): £20 // £2
As you can see there are big differences between my hosting and the cheap hosting, the main being the price, the main reason for the high price is for the comfort and support i get from knowing that if i (or anyone else) messes up my hosting, my hosting company (servint) will go out there way to fix it, where as with cheap host you can be off line for days at a time with no support or even a reason why your site is down (usually due to cheap hardware).
Im not saying that you should be spending £20 a month on hosting, i just wanted to prove a point that the first deal you come across may not be the best for you, and a lot of the stuff i use currently with my hosting you will not need straight away, however if you ever wish on building an interactive and dynamic website, then you would at minimum need php and mysql support.
