Post: How To Get Yourself On The Web - Designing A Template

Another important factor in building your own website is the look and feel of the site. Yes by look and feel i mean the design.

There are 2 main ways around this:

  • Design the site yourself. (many people design their own sites, this requires the minimum knowledge of HTML*. If you want nicer designs you will probably wanna add in some graphics. There is also software such as Dreamweaver that makes things a lot easier, Dreamweaver itself take a bit of getting used to and is by no means novice software. Some dreamweaver tutorials can be found here*.)
  • Let someone else design it. (you could choose to use a pre-built template that someone else has made, the main problem with this is the cost. Prices can go from free (for basic templates) to hundreds of £££’s.)

The other bad point about using pre-built or web-ready template designs is that, if at a later date you wish to change something like the colour or look of the design, it is a lot harder to do if you do not have the original files, especially if the template design is image based.

Does Your Design Work? Give It A Test

One other thing you need to thing about when designing a template is, is it accessible? Does it work well with all the different types of internet browsers? Does it display correctly on all screen displays and resolutions?

A lot of display problems are usually caused by in-valid code, this can be fixed by giving it a HTML validation check*, the second most common problem is cross-browser display. Internet Explorer is a pain in the butt when it comes to displaying web sites properly, especially if the design is CSS* based, the easiest way to test your web site in multiple browsers is to install a copy of each one.

The four main Internet browsers are Internet Explorer, Firefox, Netscape Navigator and Opera.
