Post: is my dream school right for me?
So, you’ve wanted to go to this college since you were like nine. You saw it on TV or something, and you like the way the grass looks or something completely random like that. But you’ve never really considered it this way before. Whether you’re a really ambitious seventh grader or a kind of slacking kid in final form, you have to ask: Is my dream school right for me? It’s a good idea to visit college campuses before you decide. If that’s not possible, visit the website (if it doesn’t have a website, you might just have second thoughts, ha) and look at the campus and the vibe of the school. The disadvantage of websites is that it had whatever vibe the board trustees want it to have, but you might have to make do. Some questions to ask are:
- What is the average class size? Larger classes and smaller classes each have their advantages and disadvantages.
- How accessible are the professors? If you have a pressing question, you don’t want to run around after the professor for to long.
- Are most classes taught by professors, TAs or graduate students?
- What is the school known for? What majors are most supported, or popular? You might want to rethink going to a school running Windows 95 to study computer graphics.
- What are the main social activities on campus? Where do students go to relax and have fun? Are there shops, or a mall nearby? How about a clinic or hospital?
- What do students complain about? Visit dorms, if possible, ask around. Check out the food!
- What kinds of support services are available? Tutors, advisors, health care? And no, a first aid kit and a guy named Bud do not a nurse’s office make.
There’s no such thing as too curious, or too many questions! You’re about to make one of the biggest decisions of your life, so you want to be sure you have the answers you need to make the right choice!
