Post: My story of life as a dad so far

1. Pregnancy
Our baby was never planned and has never been regretted, however the road from conception to now has not been as smooth as a lot of teens think it is, here is my story so far.
When i was first told i was shocked, scared and did not know what i was going to do, thankfully i had some security in knowing i had a job and a girlfriend who i loved, we sat down and discussed our options, and started to plan out our future together. It took months before the whole ‘I’m going to be a parent’ finally kicked in.
For the first 3 months (up until the first scan) we kept it to ourselves and worked out how we were going to tell our friends and family, would they be happy? look down on us? have we ruined our lives? we just didn’t know what to expect.
Thankfully our parents took it well, and at around 4 months we took a 2 week holiday to Spain.
Most of the pregnancy went pretty easy, Kirsty found it harder and harder to be flexible and we gradually started to piece together all the little baby bits, the worst part of pregnancy was still to come and that was the labour.
2. Labour

Kirsty had been getting pains for a day or 2, then on the night of the 24th march, they were started to get stronger, we knew what was about to come, but it was too early to go to the hospital, we ended up staying awake all night and called for a taxi at around 4 in the morning.
We got to the hospital and she was 4cm dilated so there was no turning back now, no being sent home, no this and no that, she was going to have this baby today!
Note: I’m not going to go into too much details about the next 11 hours as I’m not sure how much Kirsty wants the world to know, however it was not pretty.
She was in labour for a total of 11 hours and Reece was born around half 3 in the afternoon, there was blood everywhere, kirsty was knackered and the baby looked like he had just walked out of a war-zone, long story short, there were complications towards the end of the pregnancy and after 1 and a half hours of pushing the docs decided that they would have to help the baby out. Half way through getting the baby out, his heart rate started to drop so docs were left with no choice but to snip (no not snip as in a c-section. yes a snip as in a painful snip) twice and pull the baby out. There was blood everywhere and i mean like a couple of pints of blood over me, kirsty and the floor. I needed some air and almost fainted.
Note: i used a still from the film knocked up for the photo as it has a great labour scene!
3. Birth onwards

The first weeks were hard, so much to do, so little time to do it, remember a baby takes up most of your time, only time you get to yourself is when they are sleeping, in this spare time you have to do the housework that you’ve been neglecting, get the shopping in and also give yourself time to relax.
For the first weeks it was a case of feed, sleep, change nappy, feed, sleep, change nappy etc, so you got quite a bit of free time to fit other stuff in, however as he started to grow, he started having bigger feeds and less sleep, which meant less time to yourself. If you can get into some sort of routine that’s great, however not all babies stick to a routine, Reece certainly don’t, so 70% of the time you have to work around him, if he sleeps at 4 in the afternoon then that is when the washing gets done, if he wakes at 2 in the morning then that is when you get up.
That’s all part of the fun, however when he is screaming and you have already fed him, his nappy is clean and his has no wind and you’ve tried comforting him and you have run out of ideas, fun is the last thing on your mind, 30 minutes of screaming and i mean ear-piercing screaming is all it takes to turn a day up-side down and make you as stressed as you will ever be.
You might say, well i baby sit screaming kids every week so i could handle a baby, this approach will certainly land you with a shock when your own screaming baby comes! Constant lack of sleep, financial worries, stress, stressed partner, crying baby and no time to relax, you will soon see how different (and how much harder) it is.
So far i have only mentioned the bad, as much as he is bad (well cant class as bad as his only way of communicating is through crying) he is good too! In fact he is probably more good than bad, but like i said it only takes 1 bad day and that last week of happiness is soon forgotten!!
My baby Reece is now almost 4 months old, it has not been easy and yes it has been the greatest challenge of my life!, i doubt that it will get any easier either, regardless of whether he is having a good day or a bad day, he will always be my little soldier and before you ask, no i don’t regret a day and yes it has all been worth it.
I look forward to more good and bad days that are ahead.
I did not write this post to say whether its right or wrong to get pregnant, i just want you all to face reality and know that it is not easy, it will be one of the toughest journeys of your life. If your having sex, remember to play it safe and wear some protection.
