Post: Website Nightmares

Ever had one of them days, where you try doing something and it just back-fires? Today was one of them days.

Well today i thought i would update to MySQL 5, the instructions that were given in WHM seemed easy enough to follow.

  1. Select MySQL 5
  2. Run Software/Update Server Software (or /scripts/mysqlup) for this to take affect.
  3. You should then run buildapache/easyapache after changing this option.
  4. You may also need to run /scripts/perlinstaller –force Bundle::DBD::mysql.

So i followed the instructions, re-built apache (i thought i should also upgrade to PHP 5 too), once all of it had finished running i discovered that MySQL was failing to start :(

I tried re-booting the server, but that did not solve the problem and considering WHM did mention;

Updating from a previous verion of MySQL to a later version is not automaticlly reversable. You should backup your databases if you think you might wish to downgrade in the future.

I thought i was going to have to restore my VPS to a previous backup (around a week or 2 old), which would mean more down-time and a loss of a lot of data (which i had worked on this week).

However i had a saviour, i contacted my host (ServInt), to see if they could fix whatever it was i had screwed up on, and voila (i don’t know what they did) it’s working once again, with no loss of data :D

I would rather pay that few extra $$ a month and know my VPS is in safe hands (should it crashed and i can’t fix it), then get a cheap host that offers no support.

Remember, quality matters when it comes to hosting ;)
